Florida Garden and Landscape Advice

Residents of every Florida County can make use of free and invaluable landscape and garden information which affects the plant life in their area through their local Cooperative Extension Agency.

The latest news on insect and other horticultural pests affecting the local area is always posted on the website. Included are informative, illustrated articles with numerous images to help properly identify insect pests or distinguish them from beneficial insects.

Advice on treating or not treating pests is given based on the latest information provided nationally from land-grant universities.

At present many South Florida landscapes are being damaged by a new pest, Pink Hibiscus Mealybug, or PHM.

Beneficial wasps which are predators of PHM have been released by the Division of Plant Industry. Ladybugs have also been observed feeding on PHM.

If you have damaged pink hibiscus, this may be a good time to replace it or wait out the infestation.

"Homeowners are strongly encouraged not to spray for mealybugs, including the use of soaps and oils. Any spray can kill the beneficials being released. ."
